Can you use hashtags in writing (a book or something of the like)?

For context, "Life’s #1 rule: don’t trust a..." In that sentence, should there be no hashtag, and instead, "Life's number one rule: don't trust a..."

In all formal writing, you should avoid abbreviations and contractions. So yes, you should say “Life’s number one rule...” not “Life’s #1 rule...”

Abbreviations are for quick note-taking or informal contexts, not for any kind of proper public readership.

In journalism we always write it as "No. 1"

In a book, essay or report, use "number one rule."
