Do other earbuds work? Do they work in another device?

Did you push them into the jack all the way or only to almost all the way were many jacks stick?

Is the volume on and not set to silent?

this might help trouble shooting from Apple's website https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203026

It is good that they don't not work. That means they work, so you are good to go!

The headphones could be old, I don’t know when you got the phone. It could be your volume is down? (Sometimes you got to check) or your phone might be connected to a Bluetooth device. Or it might be the headphone jack itself that is broken.
