    NO. ALWAYS wear some foot cover (socks, nylons, etc.) when wear boots.

    Of course you can. Often boot leather is softer than shoe leather. No one can see the socks with the boots so it is just a matter of choice. Also, it would be a cooler environment without the socks.

    Women would probably have worn stockings or more rarely tights. Bare legs were not fashionable then.
