The story opens up with this couple, right, and the woman is all miffed that she's all low-class because she really wishes that she was like super-rich, so she tells her husband to pull some strings so they can rub noses with high society. He does, but after being invited to the big gala she totally freaks out because she doesn't want to waltz in there wearing like a burlap sack or something (or whatever poor Frenchies used to wear back then LOL.) Anyway, she borrows some bling from her girlfriend and looking radiant they roll up to the partay, but alas, she winds up losing the necklace. So they have to scramble to replace it. She sells her hair for 20 francs (prolly like a sawbuck), while her husband has to sell his gold watch so they're both totally bummed out.
Anyway, their kid is at school, and they're having a spelling contest. The teacher says "Little Jean-Luc Picard Depardieu, spell the word 'Israel' and use it in a sentence." So the kid is pretty nervous, but he says "This watch ain't fake, Israel" (which eerily enough sounds just as punny in French as it does in English), and all the other kids laugh that French laugh that sounds like "ho-ho-hone", until one girl who's sitting at the back of the classroom called Marguerite-Louise-Céline Guilloux (that was her name, not the classroom's name by the way), says "Oh, you mean it's real like that fake necklace your mama was wearing last week?" And everybody laughed so the kid kind of went crazy and ran screaming from the room.
Anyway, flash forward like 17 years and there's this guy, right, and he swears that he's sane, only here's the thing - his roommate is this creepy old dude with sort of like a weird eye or something and this eye, well, let's just say that it really freaks this guy out, like to the point where he can't even, LOL. And while we suspect that this unreliable narrator is probably little Jean-Luc Picard Depardieu, we can't know for certain. So the guy brutally murders the old man and hacks up his corpse and hides it beneath the floorboards, and then the cops come over and the guy invites them in and they start chatting, but the guy freaks out and starts stammering that he killed the guy and the body is under the floor, and one cop says "Well, now we feel kind of bad telling you that we came here to say that we found that necklace your mama lost all those years ago and it was actually just a really terrible piece of costume jewellery so she and your papa bought a real diamond necklace for nothing and ruined themselves because they couldn't tell the difference between paste and beads and diamonds."
And then as they're arresting the guy, one cop says "Oh, by the way, your sister, Tessie, who moved to America was stoned to death in some weird ritual, so yeah, she's dead." They sentence the guy to death, but he escapes and flees to Denmark, where he forms a company that manufactures a new toy that comes in pieces that kids can use to build things, but parents keep stepping on them, and oh man, sometimes it gets 'em right in the heel and it hurts like you wouldn't believe. So in the end, he gets his revenge on the world. FIN

In the Lego universe, within a city populated by anthropomorphic minifigures, the evil Lord Business finds a super-weapon called the "Kragle". The wizard Vitruvius attempts to stop him, but is blinded by Business's robots. Before Business leaves with the weapon, Vitruvius prophesies that a person called "The Special" will find the "Piece of Resistance", a brick capable of stopping the Kragle.
Eight and a half years later, construction worker Emmet Brickowski finds a woman, Wyldstyle, searching for something at his construction site after hours. When he investigates, Emmet falls into a hole and finds the Piece of Resistance. Compelled to touch it, Emmet experiences vivid visions and passes out. He awakens with the Piece of Resistance attached to his back, in the custody of Good Cop/Bad Cop, Lord Business's lieutenant.
Wyldstyle rescues Emmet, believing him to be the Special, and takes him to meet Vitruvius in the Old West. Emmet learns that Wyldstyle and Vitruvius are "Master Builders", people capable of building anything from their imagination without the need of instructions, who oppose Business. Wyldstyle explains Business wants to use the Kragle (a tube of Krazy Glue with a weathered label) to freeze the world into perfection. Though disappointed to find Emmet is not a Master Builder, Wyldstyle and Vitruvius are convinced of his potential when he recalls visions of a seemingly human deity referred to as "The Man Upstairs".
Emmet, Wyldstyle and Vitruvius evade Bad Cop's forces with the aid of Batman, Wyldstyle's boyfriend. They go to the hidden Cloud Cuckoo Land, a realm where mini-figures can create whatever they desire, to attend a council of Master Builders, all of whom are unimpressed with Emmet and refuse to fight Business. Bad Cop's forces attack, having placed a tracking device on Emmet, and capture everyone except Emmet, Wyldstyle, Batman, Vitruvius, and a small group of other Master Builders. Escaping, Emmet devises a plan to infiltrate Business's office tower and disarm the Kragle, but the group is captured and imprisoned in the Think Tank, where all the Master Builders are forced to make instructions. Trying to retaliate, Vitruvius is decapitated by Business, who sets a self-destruct protocol and leaves everyone to die, including Bad Cop.
As he dies, Vitruvius reveals he made up the prophecy. He soon reappears to Emmet as a ghost and tells him that it is self-belief that makes one become the Special. Strapped to the self-destruct mechanism's battery, Emmet jumps into the abyss outside the tower and severs the connection, saving his friends. Inspired by Emmet's sacrifice, Wyldstyle rallies the Lego people across the universe to use whatever creativity they have to build machines and weapons to fight against Lord Business's forces.
Emmet finds himself in the human world as a Lego mini-figure, unable to move. The events of the story are being played out by a little boy named Finn on his father's expansive Lego set in their basement. His father, "The Man Upstairs", comes home from work and chastises his son for ruining the set by creating variations of different playsets, and proceeds to permanently rebuild and glue his perceived perfect creations together. Realizing the danger his friends are in, Emmet wills himself to move and gains Finn's attention.
Finn returns Emmet and the Piece of Resistance to the set, where Emmet now possesses the powers of a Master Builder and confronts Business. Meanwhile, Finn's father looks at his son's creations and realizes that Finn had based the villainous Business on him and his perfectionism. Through a speech Emmet gives Business, Finn reconciles with his father, and the two unglue the constructions with mineral spirits, which plays out as Business having a change of heart, capping the Kragle, seemingly killing Business after it explodes, and ungluing his victims. Emmet is hailed as a hero, and begins a romantic relationship with Wyldstyle with Batman's blessing.
As a result of Finn's father allowing Finn's younger sister to join them in playing with his Lego sets, aliens from the planet Duplo beam down on the Lego world and announce their plans to destroy everyone.
