You, like most, do not understand the Presidential election process. It is NOT the individuals voting for a president, but the States.
Each state has the same number of Electoral Votes as it has representatives (Senator & Congressmen) in the federal government. This ensures that the more populated states do not dominate the less populated. And each state chooses how they will apportion the popular vote of their citizens to the Electoral Votes. All but a couple have chosen the "winner takes all" approach. So, even though a state may be almost evenly divided in the popular vote, the entire electoral vote goes toward the winning party. While the Electors are not required to cast their vote for the party candidate, they almost always do.
We are not a simple democracy, which amounts to nothing more than "mob rule". We are a complex democracy and our federal government is a Republic of Independent States. THIS is why the States vote for President and not the "popular vote".
