What is the difference between 80s- 90s heavy metal and today's heavy metal? Which one is better?

The singing and guitar playing got worse, drop tuning became more common and now there is a lot of gain. It's harder now to pick out the differences between the acts.

Soooo many differences. One thing that pisses me off about today's heavy metal (maybe mid 2000's on) is the screaming/growling/shouting front man has become acceptable. Death metal, black metal and the likes used to be wayyyy underground. Now it seems like it's everywhere. If you can't SING, then stfu.
