How did Trump and Clinton get where they are?

Okay. I'm not terribly familiar with US politics and I don't understand the process that it takes to get into presidency.

However the US is supposed to be a democracy. The way I understand it, the majority of the US strongly dislikes both Trump and Clinton.

Now my question is that since the US is a democracy and everyone hates Hillary and Trump, then how have they managed to get this far in the election so that in the end the president can only be one or the other?

You could say only 17% of Americans bothered to vote in the primaries or because of no other reasonable choices and some manipulation of votes there really is no democracy.
