how do i get the sound back on my toshiba laptop?

it is a satellite l455 red x on speker icon

    It sounds like there may be a problem with your sound card driver. Go to toshiba.com's site and search for sound or audio drivers for your laptop. Download and install the latest version that you find. I have included a link below to that area of the site. When you get there click the "Download" link and use the menus to select your specific model laptop. You will need the full model number. L455 is just the beginning portion of the number. It may be on the bottom of the laptop, or it might even be behind the battery.

    Something else I just thought of is to make sure you don't have the sound muted. Although if it was just muted you would see a red circle with a slash through it as apposed to the red "x" you mentioned. It is worth checking anyway.
