Special Characters on iPad?

I just got a new iPad and was wondering if there is a way to do special characters for mathematics (radicals,brackets, super scripts, etc.). Any input will be greatly appreciated!

    there are some free character map apps that you can download for the iphone....i think they work for the ipad also
