Are there any cool freshwater fish?

I just got a 4 foot tank and have some little guys to cycle it with, but what then, i don't want tropical and salt water is way off.

FYI in many places its illegal to catch and keep native fish. So don't do that.

If you want to stay "coldwater" you're limited. (FYI a tank without a heater, isn't cold water, its room temperature and room temperatures CAN be tropical but flucutate, a fluctuating tank temperatures can kill fish. A coldwater tank has a chiller installed, chillers cost 10x more to buy and run than a simple heater.)

See here for cold/sub-tropical fish. Sub-tropicals benefit from a heater, set low, installed to keep temperatures stable. So isn't saving you any money or trouble compared to regular tropicals.

pretend eels or sharks are cool =] there may well be a type of freshwater puffer fish, although they're attractive comfortable. think approximately to verify your tank for no less than 6 weeks in the previous than getting a number of those fish, although.

Maybe you can catch some in your local streams or rivers, because most most sold are tropical fish

Goldfish and koi are fine without a heater.
