Why is that the "greatest player in the world" is always a striker/playmaker?

Why not a defender?

A good fulback like Lahm will win the ball in a 1 on 1 from Ronaldo/Messi at least half the times...

And Ronaldo/Messi will never ever in their f cking lives be able to win the ball from a fullback in a one on one...

Update:

@ K Patel... It's unfair mate... A striker has to score once among 10 chances and he still has a good game.

If a defender makes 9 great blocks/challenges and then commits a mistake 10th time, he still has a bad game.

Update 2:

@ Dubya: Agree, they are popular because they sell more merchandise... they are pin-up stuff...

Not necessarily. There are other positional players who have been tagged in the top 100 greatest.

    GoalKeepers

    Peter Schmeichel

    OLiver Jahn

    Sap Maier

    Gianluigi Buffon

    Dino Zoff

    Rinat Dasayev

    Lev Yashin

    Defenders

    Paulo Maldini

    Franco Baresi

    Roberto Carlos

    Cafu

    Carlos Alberto

These players are some of the greatest to ever grace the game.

It's just most fans think the Strike / Playmaker positions are high profile. But it's not always.

They are popular AND defenders are mostly the guys who ruin the game. Players are rated based upon creating opportunities. Not many defenders manage to do that. When a defender is considered the driving force for the whole team, they should be awarded that title.

  • because they OWN the defenders on a consistent basis

If a defender OWNED strikers very consistently he would be called the best eg Canavarro

but defenders are prone to lapses in concentration

even the best among them like Rio or Puyol have their howlers

defenders' howlers look way more horrible than a striker's (unless its way tooo bad like Bendtner's)

Football is all about scoring more goals than your opponents,so it stands to reason that the players who score those goals ie. the strikers, are considered the best.
