going into something with knowledge and awareness

being aware of your surroundings and the situation

have you ever heard of phrases like 'blindly loving someone' or 'sticking you head in the sand'

those are phrases that mean you are not necessarily being aware of your surroundings

you are just not paying attention to what's going on

whereas your phrase is the exact opposite

eyes wide open means that there is a great awareness of the situation

Hi Birdy! I could be wrong but, here's my take on that saying?? Someone who enters into a situation, fully aware of what may happen. Inasmuch as they should be responsible / accountable for their actions. Things do not go as they'd have hoped. Everything goes wrong. So that they had their " eyes wide shut. " They could see all clearly before them, yet were unaware of what was there to begin with.

Usually it refers to a situation where someone has made a rather dubious decision in spite of the fact that they had pertinent knowledge ahead of time to encourage them not to make that decision.

    For example:

Sally married John with her eyes wide open. She knew he was an alcoholic before they married.
