Emperical Formula for Vanadium oxide?

Vanadium oxide is used as an industrial catalyst. The percent composition of this oxide is 56.0% vanadium and 44.0% oxygen. Determine the emperical formula for vanadium oxide.

    To do these, you need to get weight % into something proportional to mole %. Just divide the weight % of each component by it atomic weight and you will get numbers that are proportional to relative numbers of V & O atoms:

    56%/50.94 = 1.099

    44%/16.00 = 2.75

    Now, divide both numbers by the smallest one to try to get them into whole numbers

    1.099/1.099 = 1.00

    2.75/1.099 = 2.50

    Since we can't have a half of an atom in the formula, we will multiply everything by 2 to get both of them into whole numbers.

    Thus, the formula becomes V2O5.
