the five major types of musical instruments:

brass, woodwinds, percussion, strings, and keyboards

However Wikipedia has a completely different line-up

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_instrument

I've never considered "brass & woodwind" to be the same family.

However they do list "Voice" as an instrument - and any good singer will tell you they refer to their voice as an 'instrument' that they have to take care of. Before all the synthasizers, a Piano was considered to be percussion because of the hammers inside of it striking the strings. The electronic age has created a new category of instrument.

It looks like the answer just depends on who's school of music you're learning from.

    Good Luck with the badges!

Electronic. In the mb book, page 13 of the 2002 printing - first page of the "Musical Instruments" section.

    Reeds are woodwinds.

"Musical instruments can be grouped in five major classes: (1) stringed instruments, (2) wind instruments, (3) percussion instruments, (4) keyboard instruments, and (5) electronic instruments."

Wind (brass, woodwind), String, Percussion, Keyboard, Electronic. However, I have heard pianos placed into both percussion and string groups. And of course your voice could be considered a wind? You decide for yourself.
