Best answer: Thanksgiving was never intended to be a fun holiday; American thanksgivings were originally a "Day of Prayer and Fasting," and Thanksgiving Proclamations were issued by the King (during the colonial period), or by a Governor, before they were adopted by US Presidents (i.e. Washington). Sometimes there were several a year! They were issued to commemorate momentous events, be it the birth of a Prince, a military victory, or to pray for relief from a famine. Sme people locked themselves into prayer-closets and read from the Bible. In America in the 19th century it mutated into a day of feasting and a gathering of family.

Christmas as we know it evolved in the 19th century and despite Charlie Brown's protestations (and our own), it was largely a commercially motivated "invented tradition." As such it was targeted for children, and gift-giving. It was an amalgamation of different Christmas traditions from places such as Germany, where gifts were hung on trees, and the Dutch Sinterklaas. Washington Irving promoted the Dutch figure and it involved into Santa Claus... the modern version we know evolved from cartoons by Thomas Nast (the same man who gave us the Republican Elephant and Democratic Donkey), and was evolved from the jovial depiction in Coca Cola advertisements.

Early English and American Christmas celebrations were raucous drinking parties that were outlawed! Analogies have been drawn between the Roman Saturnalia and Nordic yuletide celebrations, but these are indirect influences on early Christmas traditions.

American Christmas traditions evolved in the 20th century. Electric Christmas Lights were popularized, the Nutcracker ballet became a Christmas tradition, and of course shopping- lots of shopping and gift-giving.

It was my first Thanksgiving in Paris. I didn’t have any American friends, there were no turkeys for sale, and our tiny apartment didn’t even have an oven. I had completely given up on celebrating Thanksgiving.

Unbeknownst to be, my Moroccan boyfriend (now husband) invited a few friends over and got us a rotisserie chicken and some roasted potatoes. We celebrated Thanksgiving with our chicken and potatoes, squeezed into our 40m2 apartment (about 400 square feet). It was a truly lovely Thanksgiving feast.
