What kind of computer do you have?

    Favourite answer:

I am currently using a self-assembled desktop tower with a 6 core AMD FX processor running Windows 10. Next to that is a desktop tower PC running Windows XP because it has a brilliant sound card and related software that is not supported by later versions of Windows.

For Zoom, I use an HP laptop with a 4 core processor running Windows 8.1.

Somewhere around I have a Samsung 10" tablet running an old version of Android but I rarely use it.

Should I buy a 1 TB or 2 TB external hard drive?

I'm looking to buy an external hard drive to store all my videos, photos and music. Over the years, I have accumulated around 300 GB of all that. So 1 TB seems to be plenty for what I need. But my local Best Buy has a 1 TB external hard drive for $50 and 2 TB for $60, only $10 more. While the 1 TB is plenty for what I need, it's literally just $10 more for double the amount of storage. That's a very small price increase for that added safety net of space should I ever need it... if I ever do.

Should I buy the 2 TB hard drive since it's only $10 more? Or should I just get the 1 TB since it's more than enough space I need right now?

Is 2 seperate routers a good idea?

SO.. me and my family use the same router connected the same ISP atm and its extremely slow because so many of us are connected to it ( 6 people ). I want to pursue streaming and bought myself an expensive pc to do so however the internet isn't good enough to let me do so.

We all are connected via ethernet so we and have tp links around the house so we've done everything possible so far. I want to get my own internet from a DIFFERENT ISP and use it for myself.

My question is, is it even possible? and will it be worth it if we are connected via ethernet to everything will the interferance be noticeable and are there any other negative sides to this?

    Thanks!

Are used/refurbished PCs a good investment?

    Favourite answer:

They are not the newest on the block but maybe adequate for you.  My refurbished XP lasted 15 years and then the hard drive wore off of its spindle.  The platters are spinning at 15,000 RPM so when it came off,it clattered inside the Hard Drive..  Just got a used clean hard drive and had it installed and configured to be seen by the computer by the shop.  My old information is toast.  So, I started again. Make sure it is Windows 10 O.S. and you are up to date.

My computer has memory issues, what should I do? ?

My computer would spontaneously reboot and sometimes you would hear a long beep.

My computer had 16gb of ram, 2x 8gb loaded into it.

Windows began to show just 8GB of ram, the other 8GB disappeared (I had this ram in there for a long time you are talking about 2015)

I took the ram out (both sticks and put in brand new ram)

While the ram is recognized, the spontaneous reboots still exist.

    What could be the problem?

Does the Facebook friend suggestions sometimes mean that the person viewed your profile?

I recently got a friend suggestion and it was an ex girlfriend of mine, and I remember getting one from her months before that... the weird thing is that my facebook profile is NOT the same profile when I used to date this girl at that time, and I don't have any friends in common with her so I don't understand how Facebook are finding a link between us... I also currently have NO Facebook friends added to my profile (as I only really use Facebook to participate on groups)

Has anyone else had a strange experience like this?

For you older programmers, how did you manage without Google?

    Favourite answer:

There were books and magazines. Magazines told you about new technology and books. So you'd buy the books with reviews in the magazines. To buy a book you had to go to the bookshop and fill in a postcard. A few weeks later the postcard would arrive to tell you the book was in the shop.

p.s. There was no free software. If you wanted to try out a new language you had to pay the full price for the compiler. Also you had to type out a computer program on cards. One card per line. There were heavy if you had a big program. The cards had to be handed in to the computer technician who'd run the program. You could collect the output the next day. If there was an error, such as a missing comma, it then took another day to see if the fix worked.

See advert. Borland C++ was the cheapest C++ compiler, £495 (£749 with Frameworks), which was a lot of money in those days (£1,086.80 and £1,644.47). The compiler came on 15 floppy disks in a great big box full of books.

My laptop is 5 yrs old will be upgrading this year. I dont want to invest a lot on a device that i will soon not use. BUT I have read that when upgrading RAM it is usually done with another same size ram. (8gb + 8gb, 16+16 4+4 etc) i have a 8gb installed and just one more available slot and am thinking of buying 4GB RAM.

    Cat cables question?

    Hi everyone,

I have CAT cables all throughout my house, but they don't work directly from the wall. The technician told me that I have to buy a hub and connect it to the router. If someone could please explain for a non-tech person, in simple terms, what do I need to buy, where to buy it, and how do I need to connect stuff? (This all has me very confused).Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

What are the best coding languages to learn in 2021?

I’m interested in starting a career to be a software developer, but I’m not too sure with which one I should actually put my time into because I know coding always updates so you can be learning one that’s not useful anymore

Why are external hard drives better than USB flash drives for long term storage?

    Favourite answer:

So you are getting a few terms combined which is causing confusion

    Reliability wise

Tape drives are the most reliable

    Enterprise SSDs are next

    Consumer SSDs are after that

    Hard drives are next

and flash drives are the least reliable

Flash drives (to make them cheaper) have no wear leveling and generally use cheaper flash which dies much quicker.

in perfect storage conditions a flash drive will lose data after 5-7 years un powered

hdds can generally last 7-10 before the disks start failing from disuse

SSDs can store data unpowered for up to 25 years (each degree C above room temp they lose 1 year of unpowered data retention, and each degree below C they gain 1 year of unpowered data retention up to 30 years max)

Tape drives can easily store data for 30-50 years unpowered (they are what most companies use to store data as they are very reliable)
