Best answer: You'll get a lot of people that will deny it through propagated thinking. Their thinkings are such because they've been conditioned to think that way. Our current society would like people to reject any and all things supernatural. So whether they know it or not, most people have a biased opinion on the matter.
That being said, I might have a biased opinion on the matter based on a philosophical understanding of the universe (Not a religious one).
I, for one, believe in ghosts and demons (they are not the same), though I have never seen one absent a dream, I'm not willing to dismiss millions of sightings over the past thousands of years as insanity, misunderstandings and lies: President Jimmy Carter's UFO sighting, Napoleon Bonaparte's little red gnome, the countless ghost sightings of Anne Boleyn (Henry VIII's 2nd wife), numerous religious exorcisms conducted throughout history, Alexander the Great's flying shields (UFOs?), and pretty much everything Edgar Cayce and Aliester Crowly are known for, etc.
Inevitably the opinion is yours, the following is my understanding, take what you will from it, leave whatever doesn't fit your opinions:
There are 4 types of ghosts, Type 1 I will focus on the most:
Type 1 is a presence or a disembodied spirit. Most spirits move onto the afterlife once that die, some may leave omens along the way (clocks stopping or birds tapping on windows at the moment if a person's death). They remain behind for some "unfinished business", something terribly important binds them to this world. They don't usually follow people, they tend to stay in an area that was common for them during their life. They are energy, not physical beings, so they can exhibit force, but necessarily touch or move something with no physical aperture.
There's also the theory that they are not the spirit themselves of the deceased person, but possibly a consciousness copy, as in an autobiographical version of the soul, not the soul itself. Some have suggested that the spirit moves on, but this form remains behind, dispersing one the body has decayed.
Type 2 is an imprint, not a conscious spirit, generally brought about by routine during life. If a person comits the same routine during life it may leave an energetic imprint on the Space-Time continuem. No conscious spirit, just an energetic duplicate of them performing an action.
Type 3 is residual energy, no spirit, no sightings, but the remains of energy of past lives. This generally exhibit themselves on an emotional level. I remember this one place in Kentucky built prior to the Civil War; slaves were often tortured in the basement of this house... The energy of these slaves lingered. When a person enters the basement they are overcome with dread and fear. It is the emotional energy left behind triggering other people to feel the same emotions.
The 4th type us a Poltergeist, which I think derived off the German term for "noisy ghost", this is when things go bump in the night and things start moving on their own, like dishes sliding off the table, etc. This is not a ghost, but a psycho manifestation of a person within the house; usually a child going through puberty. The poltergeist activity generally follows the child whether they are in the house or away. Poltergeists don't seem to be reported as much in recent years, but there have been enough records of them to show a pattern. Either they still seldom happen and the media chooses not to report it (Not surprising considering the censorship) or there are chemicals in the food that hinder psychic growth.
Demons are not the same as ghosts, yet they fall in the categories of Type 1 and Type 4. There is a presence but not one of a disembodied spirit, as the demon had no physical body, but it seems to target a specific person. Demons are destined to lose in their attempts at possession, though elementally they are more powerful in the spiritual realm then the average person, they can only achieve possession for a short time, as the body is designed as a physical vehicle specifically for that soul.
Demonic possession starts off with psychic attacks, usually through trouble sleeping and waking up at 3 am, or hearing voices in your head telling you to do evil things. Preventative measures can be taken at this point to ward off the demon. When the body and spirit are weak enough the demon will try to take over. Of course, the outcome is never successful, resulting in an exorcism or death. The demon can never hold control over the body for too long. The body cannot live without the soul it was made for, and in the cases of exorcisms, religious affiliation does not matter. Hinduism, Christianity and Islam all have version of an invocation exorcism and they all work. It's not through divine intervention, they all channel energy through a name of power. Because fundamentalist followers have faith in their God, that God's name is imbued with the energy of those who believe. When the demon is trying to force negative thoughts onto the person, it's trying to whittle an environment it's more comfortable with. Most religions view their gods with positive attributes.
A lot of people can go through life without experiencing anything paranormal, but most of the ghostly phenomenon happens on a level beyond us. We all have a soul within our bodies that make up a large percentage of who we are. But while we are in our physical bodies we are blind to the other world because there is a reason we're temporarily visiting this physical dimension. Only under certain conditions and for brief moments can we see a ghost. They vibrate on an energetic wavelength that most eyes are not designed to pick. Just because we have minimum contact with them doesn't mean they don't exist.
I could go on a lot more, but I've taken up enough space. Again, this is all my view of things, you may think differential, as is your right. Are you more comfortable believing there's something after death greater then ourselves, or are we all bags of chemicals of an accidental universe that has no meaning?
