I've noticed a recurring theme of the "prophets" aka political intellectuals in middle east under the oppression of the roman empire dictating and mixing their personal grievances/politics into religion to try to spread their ideas throughout roman empire and execute some kind of social change to undermine the empire. they give some lip service to cesear but overall are trying to undermine the authority of the emperor saying that there is a greater power and the rich elite are sinful/ people should not have so much kind of a socialism against luxury. change the empire's culture and bring it down from within. make the greatest person in the empire from the emperor to someone tortured and executed by the empire and make everyone guilty feeling to be associated with the roman empire instead of proud. And then catholisim was a attempt to co-opt the movement and integrate it into the empire but of course it failed.

Best answer: The VC and NVA did their share of atrocities too. Neither side was squeaky clean.

But there is no doubt in my mind, a VN war veteran, that America's involvement was an illegal war. McNamara got us into it with the fake GOT attack and Nixon kept us in it because he didn't "...want to be the first American President to lose a war." [See source.] Westmoreland, a kiss *** general, kept throwing in more and more American troops claiming America could win the war by sacrificing more men.

The war began because the US reneged on its promise to have nation-wide elections where the VN people could vote on reunification. We knew which way the vote would go and back then the so-called domino effect where all of SE Asia would become communist one by one was a dominant thesis.

So yes the VC and NVA were the good guys, but only in the sense that they were fighting to reunify their country, which was promised to them in the first place by us.

PS: SE Asia countries did not all become communist after VN became whole again. In fact the ruthless Khmer Rouge communists of Cambodia were ousted.

PPS: Many Americans go to VN now for vacations. They are welcomed by the VN government and its people. The infamous Hanoi Hilton has become a tourist attraction.
