I think one of the greatest threats to our democracy is the partisanship of the American news media today. Somewhere along the way the line between reporting and editorializing, and the line between news and entertainment, got first blurred and then erased completely. The blame for that lies in the need for media companies to make a profit and the fact that both the shareholders and advertisers have political agendas they want advanced. My thought is that if a private foundation was set up with say a $100 billion endowment, that would be plenty to both grow the endowment and completely finance a non-profit news organization with an annual budget of a couple billion dollars, which is well more than the current operating budget of CNN. Of course obtaining that endowment is a major problem, but assuming you did, how would you ensure the political leanings of the managers of the foundation, or any other entity for that matter, didn't affect reporting?
