It's impossible to give short answers to such large questions.
You should try wikipedia, you wil have a lot of informations there.

France is a country not a cult, there is no french beliefs. There are here the same religions than on other occidental countries (catholicism, islam, judaism, buddhism, etc) but half of the french are atheists or agnostics.
