Don't worry too much about it. Malaysian people are multi-lingual people. I believe both of you can communicate well even if your english is not good. Don't forget that you could still communicate with her using sign language. Believe me, she can understand you if you speak with her in english and use some sign language. Also, you can teach her some simple italian language and maybe she can teach you some simple malay language. As hugging, it is mostly done among the girls or among the boys. Boys do not hug a girl and vice versa unless they are couple. So if you are a boy, it is better not to hug her just not to send wrong signal. If you really do want to hug her, ask her first,

AFS is well organised and will prepare both of you so don't worry .
Having contact with AFS you ought to know that people are essentially the same the world over . We have had colonisation before and so we are quite familiar with the European way of life . Relax , be yourself . Yes you can hug her . In fact i have close friends like family friends that practice hugging but i admit its not too common

If you hug her she will understand especially with the AFS training .While you may not be excellent in English you know enough to communicate . That is just fine

I think you can worry less and think of the fun time you will get from the home stay . Let her try your food and make short trips together . Life is fun live it up

Malaysian Chinese are much like people over the world and are pretty opened minded especially those that join cultural exchange programs

for the first couple of times you can probably ask if you can give her a hug, or you can just hug her. even if she may seem surprise at first, she'll get use to it. most people love to be hugged.
