The Pentax K-x won the best travel gadget of 2009 in Times Magazine and won the best beginner DSLR of 2009 in Times UK.

The Pentax K-x contains a APS-C sensor with high ISO image quality that rivals that of full frames from the Sony A900 and A850. The Pentax K-x has usable ISO up to 12800 which is a huge benefit for a entry-level DSLR.

The Pentax K-x can record clear and sharp high-definition videos, the Nikon D3000 does NOT record videos at all.

Pentax has used the exact same mount since early 1970's, the K-mount. This allows EVERY single lens made in the K-mount since the 70's to be able to fit and work with the Pentax K-x. There are also M42 lens mounts for the K-mount that allows every single lens ever made for Pentax SLR and DSLR system to work with the K-x. The Nikon does not boast this capability.

Pentax offers high-end APS-C lenses from their DA* line-up that rivals the quality of other companies more expensive full frames. Pentax offers weather-sealed lenses in their DA* line-up that is water resistant and dust resistant with a built-in silent auto focus motor. With high quality optical and cosmetic lenses made from Pentax to support their APS-C DSLR's like the Pentax istD, K10D, K100D, K100DS, K20D, K200D, K2000, K-x, and K-7.

Pentax supports their APS-C DSLR's like the K-x more than any other camera company that will support their APS-C, from all the information I gave and am about to give, you will see why Pentax supports their APS-C like other companies will support their full frames. The Pentax K-x is only a entry-level and yet it is NOT stripped down of features and boasts quality of a high-end DSLR camera. Unlike the Nikon D3000 and D5000, they are stripped and Nikon only wants to boast the bigger features for their more expensive cameras and especially its full frames.

The Pentax K-x has a built-in image stabilization system that helps prevent blurring photos, this allows all K-mount lenses that fit the K-x to be image stabilized, even old ones from the 1970's. The Nikon D3000 and D5000 does NOT have this feature and you will have to buy more expensive lenses with vibration reduction.

The Pentax K-x has a built-in screw-drive autofocusing motor, the D3000 and D5000 does not. The K-x will be able to autofocus on lenses that do not have a built-in focusing motor. This allows every single autofocus lens new and old that has the K-mount to work on the K-x. The D3000 and D5000 does NOT have a built-in screwdrive and cannot autofocus on most third party lenses from Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina. You will have to be the more expensive built-in autofocus motor lenses to autofocus with the D3000 and D5000.

The Pentax all throughout it's lifespan has a rich history of making superb prime lenses. The Pentax FA 31 F/1.8 Limited lenses is known to be one of the sharpest lens ever made. The Pentax FA 50 F/1.4 lens is known to be one of the most affordable high quality optical lenses in the autofocus 50/1.4. With the FA 31 F/1.8, FA 43 F/1.9, and FA 77 F/1.8 Limited series lenses, there is no going wrong with Pentax lenses. There is even a high quality prime line-up made for APS-C sensors from Pentax alone, just look at the DA Limited lenses from Pentax, it screams out quality.

The Pentax K-x has trap focusing that you can turn on. When turned on, it will not take the picture with the shutter release down unless it is in focus. This will work with all lenses ever made for the Pentax K-mount, including old M42 mount lenses. This is incredibly useful for people who are good and not so good with manual focusing at all. You don't want to take the picture unless it is completely in focus, trap focus has it. The Nikon D3000 and D5000 does NOT boast such a feature.

The Pentax K-x has been reviewed by many websites all over the web and has been praised by it's ability to boast so much in such little price and in such a little body. It also comes in red, white, and blue colors.

Do I need to say more? Any more facts need to be added? I already added up supporting sentences. While everybody who says Nikon this or Nikon that will just say Nikon because Nikon is Nikon. The fact is I say Pentax because Pentax has THIS and it has THAT which others don't have. Now which are you going to choose? Nikon because someone tells you that it's Nikon or are you going to choose what's BEST FOR YOU? Pentax.

    ONLY $650 w/ 18-55 kit lens.

    I have a Pentax myself, I used to own a K2000 and now I own a K-7.

My vote goes to the Pentax. It has Pentax's version of Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body so any lens you use will enjoy that benefit. Nikon has their version of IS in some of their lenses.

Pentax, like Nikon, has kept the same lens mount used for decades. Every Pentax K-mount lens ever made is compatible, with some limitations, with the K-x. Plus, that 30 year old Pentax 400mm lens will be an IS lens. Nikon can't say that about their legacy lenses.

    REVIEW:
Looking over several cameras and choosing one for someone who has outgrown point and shoots, I came back to the Nikon D3000. By no means will this model blow away the seasoned photographer, however it does cover the basics and more. We picked it up and tried it out over the weekend.

First time DSLR users will enjoy the Guide Mode. It literally walked us through different shoot scenarios via the fixed 3" LCD screen. An excellent tool, its step by step instructions allowed my niece to move from the operating booklet in no time. After a few more runs, I am sure that she will feel quite comfortable shooting in the manual mode. The quick shutter release was a nice surprise.

Upon completing two days of shooting with the Nikon D3000, I walked away impressed. In manual mode, indoor shots were a balanced and perfect mix of shadow and color. As usual with shooting in low light, noise will make an appearance. However this system can be tweaked to deliver some outstanding indoor photographs. The bottom line is proper settings.

A basic fix is the VR (Vibration Reduction) feature located on the lens. This should be activated, especially indoors. A tripod will certainly help. In auto mode, just set the camera to night portrait and sit back and enjoy the rest of your flight.

Outdoor shots were vibrant, sharp and rich in color without editing. The onboard flash system was more than capable in meeting fill flash requirements. Without a doubt the overall performance of the camera, features and image quality is excellent.

With 10.2 megapixels to work with, I easily blew up a personal favorite my niece had taken to 16" x 20". Even though I don't see myself trading in my Nikon D300 for this model anytime soon, this camera is by far an upgrade over any of the souped up point and shoots out there.

Its easy to see that the real jewel in this model is the auto focus system. With six auto mode settings (Landscape, Sports, Child, Closeups, Portrait, and Night Portrait) each and every photograph can be a keeper. Onboard editing tweakers won't be disappointed with this model. It covers the basics. The D3000 operates with both SD & SDHC cards.

The Nikon D3000 is paired with a Nikkor 18-55mm AF-S DX lens. It will operate with any Nikkor DX and AF-S lens. Standard AF lens is a no go. Since this model is not fitted with the built in optical image stabilizer, I recommend switching on the Vibration Reduction (VR) feature located on the lens. Still the best anti vibration tool is a tripod.

Nikon makes it really simple with a thumb dial for tweaking aperture and shutter speed. Metering, focus modes, and exposure compensation are easily controlled via the menu. The D3000 does not shoot in video mode. This model easily shoots over three frames per second in continuous mode. The 3D tracking sensor operates quite well in low lighting.

The Nikon D3000 camera kit comes packaged with a EN/EL3e Li-ion battery, charger, USB cable, video cable. strap, LCD cover, body & eye cap, eye cup, software CD-ROM, 18-55mm Nikkor lens, lens cap, instruction booklet and a one year Nikon warranty.

Coming out of the gate, I still find this model a little pricey for a basic DSLR. I am sure heading into the fall and holidays buyers will begin to see a noticeable price drop. Even so, the D3000 is a fine tuned replacement for the immensely popular entry level Nikon D40. Newcomers to the DSLR community will certainly enjoy this outstanding alternative.

I cant tell you anything specific about either, but I got a $310 Pentax camera for Christmas and it broke that afternoon. I was sitting down and dropped it from my knee-level onto carpet...a mere foot or two...and it never worked after that. It also messed up my card somehow because when i tried to download the photos, the card had errors all over it.

Maybe this was just a freak camera..but I thought for it to break after such a low impact it was cheap. I got a store credit at best buy and got an awesome samsung 13.6 mega pixels with money left over on the card when it was all said and done.

    Hope this helps a little.

The Pentax K-x dominates the Nikon D3000 in every way possible. If possible, save up for the K-x and not the D3000. You will be MUCH happier with the Pentax K-x, after all it is a Pentax.

Both are fine cameras. You should take yourself to your favorite camera store/department and handle both. Take pictures with both. Whichever fits your hands the best will be the one for you.
