Try not to use either. airlines from the USA are awful compared to most asian airlines. Try and take Singapore Air instead.

Asian airlines have beautiful stewardesses, great food, great entertainment options, unlimited free drinks and good friendly service. Most of the American airlines have the exact opposite.

It depends on what you are looking for in an airline.
If this is the first time you are taking long haul flights, go with SQ because they have Kris Flyer entertainment services onboard.
Certain United flights may have entertainment on board but you have to check their confirguarations. My vote would go to United for the service, quality of planes.

NWA is good because you can get long rows in row 55 if you are flying from Singapore to U.S and transiting in Tokyo. Try the ramen near the transit lounge there, heard is'nt bad also .But not all flights have onboard entertainment system. Hopefully things will change with merger with Delta. It's relatively cheaper to fly by NWA and you can easily gain a trip to Asia with one flight from SG to East Coast of U.S. The only thing I dislike about NWA will be the way they depressurize the plane and it plain sucks! Otherwise it is a good airline.

I usually take NWA for my trips to U.S. but if Singapore Airlines is offering a comparable price, then you probably can't go wrong with Singapore Airlines (SQ)

i won't take the american airlines. their service standards are atrocious. the planes are old, which means the seats are old and i have experienced once that one of the passenger's seats could not recline. it was a full flight, so you can imagine sleeping in an upright position thru out the entire flight. complains of entertainment system not working. i'd rather fly any asian airlines. i've tried sq, cathay, ana, korean, mas. they are all better than united and nwa. sq costs too much. i like the japanese the best. the service is excellent, planes are newer and they do actually clean the toilet everytime after someone uses it! except when there are lots of people waiting or they are busy doing something. that is superb service!
