What is the best mode to travel from Adelaide to Gold Coast?

Hi,
I will be in Adelaide for 8 days. i have no firm plans on what to do there. My family have 2 options.
1) Self drive to Melbourne (the great ocean road)
2) go to Gold Coast (but i dont know what is the best & cheapest way to get there

Can anyone suggest which will be a better option. i will be travelling with my family, all adults, in Feb.

Thanks you for all your reply:)

Have you thought maybe about staying in Adelaide and doing day trips to different parts of SA??? Adelaide is a beautiful city with different things to do and during Feb the weather will be warm.

Checkout out www.southaustralia.com if you want more ideas of where to visit etc.

I've driven from Adelaide to the GC and it is fun and takes 3 days to get there and the same to get back, so you won't have enough time. You can always fly to the Gold Coast if you wanted to, check webjet.com.au for some good deals. Generally though flying adel-coolangatta (the airport near the GC, about 30 mins away) is more expensive than flying there from one of the east coast cities. if you go to flightcentre.com.au you might find some good 2 days/3 night packages. I stay at Club Surfers and their rates are very cheap www.clubsurfers.com.au

Doing the Great Ocean road is a good idea, but it takes 6-7 hours before you even get to the beach. If you really want to see it properly it might be better to go when you have more time on your hands.

I think the better option is to go to the Gold Coast for a couple of nights and then spend the rest of your time in beautiful Adelaide :)

I've lived in Adelaide, Mount Gambier and Warrnambool (which SOME people say is where the graet ocean road starts lol). and I've travelled a bit too :)

the great ocean road is what it says great. try and stop on the way and see all there is to see.

if the family is going to the gold coast go with them that is the cheapest if not check the various airlines to see which is the cheapest, ie virgin, jetstar, qantas (not all that cheap usually) tiger (if it goes there) check on the net as they often have really cheap fares and is the quickest.

other options bus (a bit long and restrictive) train (also long but less restrictive).

    my personal options would be:
family (cheap), air (quick), train (restful and you see the scenery), bus (restrictive and scenery), in that order.

8 days is not really long enough to get to the gold coast and spend a few days or for that matter to get there and back if by car.

    whatever have a great time.

Driving to Melbourne on the Great Ocean Road is a wonderful experience. Allow several days to do it so that you have time to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way.

If you are going to the Gold Coast that is in a different direction to Melbourne.

From Adelaide I would fly to the Gold Coast because driving (and that includes bus and train) takes a couple of days just to get there.

Fly man, it will be quicker and the fares are not that expensive now, about $180 a ticket. Travelling by car ?? Its a long way, plenty of fuel and thats not cheap, plus you have to spens money on food and drink on th eway, maybe accomodation, The Great Ocean Road is nice but lets face it (Seen one clifftop overlooking the ocean, seen them all ) Fly dude, sometimes they even have cheap fares for $49..
