What does SingTel have to gain by sponsoring the inaugural Singapore F1 Grand Prix?

I can only think of the branding portion to the world. Someone, pls enlighten?

They want to maximise their brand recognition around the world. I've never heard of singtel before this weekend but i plan on using their product or service whenever i get the chance.

EDIT: Gatorade - I've got an old SingTel sim if you want it. We'll have to arrange a clandestine meet though to pass it over cos I didn't read the small print and there's probably a fine or beating that i don't know about.

SingTel has sponsored the Singapore GP because there are some 10-15 million people in Singapore, and there's a huge market there. Also because travellers to Singapore can use their long distance calling cards.

Brand awareness. Lots of companies have benefitted from F1 branding. Some good examples are Santander and ING. Even Midland (the current STR or is it Force India? I've lost track) joined F1 just as a public brand awareness exercise
