There are 14 commercial banks operating in Qatar, of which 7 are national including 2 Islamic banks' all operating from 114 branches.
The combined balance sheet of commercial banks indicates that these banks continued to realize high growth rates. The total value of their combined balance sheet amounted to QR129.856 million in 2005 at the end of 2004, increasing by QR38.183 million or 41.7%.
Credit facilities offered for customers inside Qatar at the end of 2004 rised about QR24.731 million against QR4933 million registered in 2004, up by 36.8%.
After Qatar's ATM network was connected to their counterparts in the GCC countries, it was also connected to the ATM networks in Egypt and Lebanon.
Credit Facilities
Credit facilities offered to the public sector in 2005 raised little amount to 1%(181)M QR to reach QR18.650 million, forming about 27.7% of the total credit facilities offered locally against QR218.480 million (38.3%) at the end of 2004.
Banks expanded the credit facilities they offered to the private sector during 2005 to the level of 48.617 million against QR29.752 offered at the end of 2004.
Clients' Deposits
Banks were able to attract more deposits including government deposits in spite of receding interest rates either on the Qatari Riyal or foreign currencies. The deposits balance increased at the end of 2005 to QR85.400 million against QR60799 million at the end of 2004, rising by QR24.601 or 40.5%.
