What is Ativan, and what does it do?

I suffer from serious depression which has got worse since my mom passed away a few weeks ago, my doctor upped my script, and prescribed ativan to help me sleep, does it work and what are the side effects?

Ativan is used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders. It is also used to treat certain types of seizure disorders and to relieve insomnia (induce sleep).Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Ativan and talk to your doctor if you experience
· drowsiness, dizziness, or clumsiness;
· depression;
· nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation;
· difficulty urinating;
· vivid dreams;
· headache;
· dry mouth;
· decreased sex drive; or
· changes in behavior.

an anti-anxiety med..it helps take the edge off and will most likely make you sleepy...

It's from the drug class benzodiazapine. Those include Valium and Xanax. It's often used as an anti anxiety drug and sleep aid. It can be also used as a relaxant before a medical procedure .
Make sure to mention that you are on this drug if you get prescribed painkillers like Vicodine or Percocet. They don't mix well.

its a sedative-plz be careful this drug is very addicting
