How to connect 9 dots on 3X3 square grid with 4 straight lines without lifting the pencil?

think outside the box, extend one of the lines past the edge of the 9 dots and come back at a 45 degree angle, going through two "side dots" (not corner dots)

    move your pencil in an M shape up the left hand side, across to the middle top row ,down the middle row and up again, finish off the straight line on the top row and move down the right hand side.

    4 straight lines, you didn't lift your pencil, you did travel over one line twice and did the top row in two bits but they are all still straight lines.

    first row dot is notate as 11,12,13
    second row 21,22,23
    third row 31,32,33

    The follow this sequence

    Line 1 :: 11 ==> 12 ==> 13 ==> (14)
    Line 2 :: (14) ==> 23 ==> 32 ==> (41)
    Line 3 :: (41) ==> 31 ==> 21 ==> 11
    Line 4 :: 11 ==> 22 ==> 33


    The matrik inside bracket is not exist but as virtual location
